Picking Up After Your Pet

Cat vs. Dog - It's one of those simple debates that never end. And like everything else these days, Americans are pretty much split down the middle. We have 68 million dog owners and 73 million cat owners in the US. But whether you prefer feline or canine, you may be overlooking the eco-impact of your pet.

This summer, dogs will flock to the lakefront, adoring owners in tow. But a day at the beach can threaten the health of our water. Chicago dogs produce 72 tons of feces a day, and 40% goes un-bagged. Dog waste left on the ground washes into sewers and the lake, carrying with it pathogens like the E. coli bacteria. So pick up Spot's waste with a BioBag--a biodegradable bag that will break down in the landfill--and help keep our water clean. Just don't throw it in your compost bin. Dog waste attracts rats and can spread disease.

Cat owners can do their part too. Each year over 2 million tons of non-biodegradable cat litter ends up in municipal landfills. Why not replace your clay cat litter with a biodegradable, all natural choice such as Swheat Scoop? If you're a DIY-type, you can make your own out of shredded paper, sawdust or wheat bran. One inch of sawdust will suit the needs of a single cat for about two weeks. Worried about the smell? Sprinkle dried orange peels in for a natural deodorizer.
