Free the Kids

I am Chicago-land native, whose favorite early memories include summers with my grandparents in Wisconsin where I picked berries, husked corn, swam after fish and became a world-class frog catcher.

I began tutoring children while in high school and have worked with kids in various capacities for twenty years. I taught junior golf in North Carolina, youth skiing in Colorado and was a Big Brothers and Big Sisters mentor in Minnesota. I tutored at KIPP Ascend and Chicago Lights, served as a Chicago Public Schools Local School Council Board Member and am currently a board member at The Academy for Global Citizenship.

For healthy childhood development, I support more unstructured outdoor playtime, where children do what children have done since the beginning: wander, wonder, explore and investigate.

I participate in the growing movement to teach as if nature mattered. Through hands-on, place-based learning that generates critical thinking skills, children learn where we live, who lives with us and how it works.  The 21st century needs leaders and nature teaches us everything we need to know, e.g. cycles its nutrients, runs on current solar energy, thrives on diversity and rewards cooperation over competition.

You can still find me in Chicago, riding my bike, picking up books from the library, feeding my pet worms, or visiting with school children.

Im the author of three childrens books, all published in 2009.

My green dream home has... equilibrium like nature. It produces at least as much energy as it consumes.

My patented dance move is... the shoe-beer.

My bumper sticker says... If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention. Give children a chance to love the earth, before we ask them to save it. - David Sobel
