Paints contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that evaporate and contaminate the air. These harmful chemicals, such as benzene and formaldehyde, may cause headache, eye irritation and nausea. Over time, they can damage the nervous system and cause cancer. During paint application and drying, VOC concentrations can be 1,000 times greater than normal. High VOC levels also produce the strong odor of fresh paint. VOCs will continue to evaporate at a reduced rate for years, polluting indoor air and contributing to illness. Latex-based paints are less toxic than oil-based, although they still contain VOCs to accelerate the drying process and prevent mold. But there are alternatives available: Low-VOC paints typically contain less than half the VOCs of standard paint. Green Seal certified paints have less than 50 grams per liter (g/L) of VOCs in flat sheens--that's 1/5 of the standard. These products are widely sold in hardware and home improvement stores. No-VOC or Zero-VOC paints have very low levels of VOCs, usually in the range of less than 5 g/L. Natural paints use ingredients like clay, citrus oils and milk protein and don't pollute the air. But in a wet climate like Seattle's you unfortunately risk mold and mildew, which can cause respiratory problems. Don't forget to look for low-VOC colorants rather than adding VOC-laden pigment to your paint. And complete the package with low-VOC primer. So next time your surroundings need a facelift, look into low-VOC paints. Not ready to repaint? Improve your air quality by opening windows and doors and using fans. This will improve your home's ventilation and lower its VOC concentrations. Find No-VOC paints locally at ecohaus and Greener Lifestyles. For a list of Green Seal certified low-VOC paints, see the Green Seal website. If a paint doesn't have the Green Seal, it might still be low-VOC--look for the VOC content printed on the container, or ask your salesperson. |
