Just What I Wanted!
Alternative Holiday Gifts

Traditionally, the Friday after Thanksgiving kicks off the holiday shopping season. A recent poll suggests 37 percent of Americans

will spend tomorrow in stores.

Although the sentiment of giving is always appreciated, the actual stuff we get can be a different matter. Last year, more than 30 million Americans planned to return holiday gifts. Families throw away 25 percent more garbage between Thanksgiving and New Years than at any other time of year. And that's not to mention the fuel we burn driving to buy and return--or the stress we often feel while standing in line listening to "Jingle Bells."

You can cross that scented soap set or pair of novelty socks off your list and still participate in the giving excitement. Just consider an alternative gift like one of these:

Gift of Giving:  At Changing the Present, you can donate in your giftee's honor to a fund of your choice, then send a recycled-paper greeting card describing the cause you've helped. Charity Gift Certificates allow the recipient to donate to a fund of their choosing.

Volunteer: Agree with family or friends to replace one gift exchange with time spent volunteering together. You might even start a new tradition! Here's a list of local non-profits that could use your help.

Experiential Gifts: Tickets to performances, gift certificates for dining, or a handwritten note agreeing to babysit or treat a friend to yoga and cocoa are low on packaging waste. Plus, they give something to look forward to beyond the holidays!
