It's Definitely Time to Start Biking!
Adam talks about the benefits of biking

Spring is in the air--even if some days are cooler than others--and it’s time to ride!

As a personal trainer, many of my clients’ successes are reflected in their ability to be a kid again. Running, jumping, twisting, turning, competing, and getting all red in the face (remind you of recess?).

Whenever I get on a bike, I love to weave in

and out of the lane dividers (NOT A VERY SAFE THING TO DO),and I once got pulled over by a cop in Mercer Island for doing this! But the point is,

those first few pedal strokes are an instant connection back to my youth.

Being green should be fun, and so should getting exercise, so take the opportunity as soon

as possible to go for a bike ride or do something outside!

In fact, take a look at Calories Per Hour, where just about every exercise you can think of

has a corresponding calorie consumption value. Just click on Activity Calculator, input your activities, and you’ll learn how many calories these tasks burn.

For example, I could ride my bike to the park (15 minutes), play kickball for an hour, play miniature golf for another hour, ride my bike home, and wax my car for a total of 1400 calories! Sounds like a great Sunday!

If you’d like to ride more, but your bike isn’t up to par, check out Recycled Cycles in Seattle.  They have great deals on used and new bikes—and they’ll also tune yours up.  I bought a really nice, soft used bike seat for my spinning bike for $5!

The Cascade Bicycle Club has great information on all things cycling, as well as a listing of

bike rentals around Seattle. Bike Works in Seattle and the Community Bike Center in Portland take donated bikes and teach kids how to fix and ride their bikes.

Finally, you have to check out Electric Bikes Northwest! You can motor up any hill in Seattle with these bikes that “enhance” your pedal power with a little (or big) push when you need it.  They’ll be happy to let you take a test drive! They just moved from Fremont to Ballard (Map)

If you just aren’t ready to hit the road because you’ve never biked before, or you just want

to lose some weight, a good quality spinning bike in your home takes up little space and is extremely quiet and durable.  I would recommend buying a good spin bike before a cheap treadmill or elliptical.  IFitness Direct offers free shipping on most orders and Craigslist usually has one or two for sale.
