Give Mom a Little Green this Sunday
Green Mother's Day Gift Ideas

Though it’s important to appreciate Mom year-round, Mother’s Day can be a special time to celebrate the caring ladies who add so much to our lives. And what better way to honor our moms and all they’ve taught us than by choosing gifts that support the health of our community and the planet?

This year, we chatted with some of Seattle’s many entrepreneurial women to find local products, services and events with a sustainable twist. Here are our top picks for some perfect Mother’s Day treats:

Beat the brunch crowds!

Host a cozy breakfast gathering at home with the help of Seattle moms Kristen Cole and Heather Chitty at Madres Kitchen. Their delicious homemade treats (like fresh-baked cinnamon rolls, or mini-quiches) will keep everyone happy, while leaving you free to visit. The earth-conscious chefs get their organic, seasonal ingredients from a network of local farmers. Just make sure to order in advance and pick up by Saturday, May 10, because these Madres will be taking Sunday off to celebrate.

Give a gift with local flavor:

  • A personalized 2-hour “Plant to Plate” session from Go Go Green Garden is sure to give Mom’s green thumb a boost. Expert gardener and accomplished foodie Amy Pennington will bring over some easy-to-grow, useful plants that she’s grown herself, and then teach Mom how to turn these garden staples into delectable treats and useful homemade remedies.
  • Light up Mom’s day with a gift set from Go Green Candles. This Lynnwood-based, woman-owned company creates lovely handcrafted candles made from clean-burning palm wax, and packaged in recycled materials.
  • Help Mom take green matters into her own hands with a green living starter kit. Kathy’s Climate Kits, the brainchild of Seattle mom Kathy Washienko. The kits come packed with home-greening tools like compact fluorescent light bulbs, a faucet aerator and reusable bags, plus action items like junk mail removal and letters to Congress.

Make it a day to remember:

Honor Mom this year by taking action to show that mothers everywhere are committed to protecting the planet for generations to come. The non-profit 1Sky Washington is helping to organize the creation of a giant hand-painted tapestry depicting climate change, and will team with Greenpeace and True Majority to arrange “Stroller Marches” on Saturday, May 10.
