Gear Up for Green October! |
|
When you start planning your fall calendar, take a cue from the Green October website. Nearly 30 local organizations have posted upcoming events focused on local sustainability. Seattle-based nonprofit Interra, which plans to launch its Puget Sound Community Card next month, built the website to help boost awareness of next month's green happenings. Events run the gamut from environmental stewardship to social justice, arts and culture to politics, and more.

Learn how much fun green community can be at the 4th Annual Sustainable Ballard Festival, September 29-30. You'll find loads of delicious locally produced food and plenty of kid-friendly activities, as well as the launch of Undriving Ballard and a clothing swap-o-rama-rama hosted by ReUseResources. Feel like getting your hands dirty? Sign up with the Stilly Snohomish Task Force to plant native trees and restore the region's waterways. Sites include Pilchuck River on October 13, Snoqualmie River on October 27, and Canyon Creek on November 10 (Pre-registration is required). Once you're fired up, add your voice to the regional movement at Sustainable Cascadia's Cascadia Convergence 2007. This two-day event will address its theme of "Climate Action and Citizen Engagement" with town hall meetings, hands-on demonstrations, local business exhibits, arts, music and more at the Seattle Center. These are just a few of the month's offerings, so don't miss the chance to get involved. "The goal of Green October," notes Derek Hoshiko of BALLE Seattle (a group that promotes local and sustainable business practices), "is to get the word out that there are solutions, primarily local ones, to solve the problems on this planet."
